How to turn a brainstorm into an action plan

A brainstorm is useful for opening up possibilities. An action plan is useful for choosing what happens next. Keep those two jobs separate, then connect them with one practical decision.

Start with a question

Name the board after the problem you want to explore, such as ‘What should my portfolio include?’ Add ideas around it before deciding which ones are good. In One Good Day, ideas can have child ideas, so a broad thought can branch into examples or smaller pieces.

Group related thoughts

Look for ideas that answer the same part of the question. A portfolio brainstorm might have branches for projects, writing, and contact details. Use notes for context and task nodes for work you could actually do. The map should help you understand the relationship, not become another thing to perfect.

Choose one idea you can test

Compare the promising branches with the time available today. ‘Rebuild the entire portfolio’ may be too much. ‘Write a short case study for one project’ is a concrete experiment that can tell you what the rest of the portfolio needs.

Send the idea to the planner

Select an idea and use its planner action to send it to One Thing, Shoulds, or Coulds. Sending it as your One Thing can bring its child ideas across as substeps. If you already have a One Thing, the app asks before replacing it. Rewrite vague ideas as actions before you start.

Keep the remaining possibilities

Leave the other branches on the board for later instead of adding every idea to today’s list. You can return to saved brainstorms, export a board, or share a snapshot by link. Your saved boards belong to this browser; a shared snapshot is not a live collaborative board.
